About
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Victoria Capital Region enables life-changing mentoring relationships for children and youth across the Victoria Capital Regional District, Sooke, Comox & Salt Spring Island.
We believe that every young person has limitless potential – and that this potential is our society’s greatest resource.
When we match a child with a trained volunteer mentor, we create a developmental relationship where the young person can be supported, challenged and empowered to realize their full potential.
Mentoring is an important way to give youth experience with essential back-and-forth relationships, helping them to develop into healthy young people who are better able to overcome life’s adversities.
Our Impact
Research shows that having a caring relationship with a trusted adult can have a big impact on a child’s emotional wellbeing, self-worth and resiliency.
Mentored young people have the support, tools and confidence for long-term stability and success in our community.
According to the Social Return on Investment Study:
- 92% of children and youth feel more confident in themselves after being matched with a supportive mentoring relationship
- Mentored youth are 50% more likely to volunteer as adults and donate 20% more money to charities and causes
- Young people who received mentoring are 17% more likely to be employed and earn 13% higher wages than their non-mentored peers
