About
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Yorkton and Area enables life-changing mentoring relationships to ignite the power and potential of young people Each time we pair a child with a mentor or introduce a group of students to a mentoring program, we start something incredible — a life-changing relationship built on friendship, trust and empowerment.
Many youth struggle with societal barriers and face adversities in their lives like detrimental living conditions, family violence, risk factors for mental health, school issues and identity challenges. These circumstances have nothing to do with the value of who they are or who they can become, but because of these situations, children and youth risk not having the opportunity to live up to their full potential. Even worse is the possibility of continuing cycles of poverty and crime or developing mental health issues. This comes at a cost to the young person, and to society. There is a solution and with the guidance and support of a mentor, these risks can be reduced or even avoided, and youth are reminded they can be anything they dream of being. Having a mentor can help a child reach their full potential. Mentoring changes, the course of young lives.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Yorkton and Area is a member of Yorkton Reconciliation and a co-chair building community relations and partnerships in the community of Yorkton. Annually for the past 30 years in November we have co-hosted a National Child Day celebration and information sessions for all Grade 5 students from Yorkton.
Our Impact
Locally, the Mentoring program continues to grow with more youth served annually one-to-one and in our group mentoring programs. We hope to continue the momentum. Recent studies support the fact that mentoring works. That it could lead to a reduction in poverty and unemployment, to safer schools and neighborhoods, and to a renewed optimism for growth. There are children waiting to be matched with a Mentor and the need continues to grow. Whether it’s in the form of time or money, there is no more important investment we as individuals can make than in helping our community’s children realize – and share – their full potential.
We believe in the value of partnerships and strive to increase and expand our services by being innovative and proactive to help meet the needs of the communities we now serve with one to one mentoring including Yorkton, Melville, Esterhazy, Churchbridge, Langenburg, and Rocanville plus other communities through group mentoring.
