About
SINCE 1960, Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland has been changing the course of young lives by ensuring that all youth in our community realize their full potential.
Children and youth in our community continue to face a multitude of varied and often complex challenges. From social pressures to educational disadvantages, there are times when life can seem overwhelming.
LEFT UNADDRESSED, THESE ADVERSITIES CAN BECOME CHALLENGES IN ADULTHOOD THAT REQUIRE COSTLY SOCIAL INTERVENTIONS.
Big Sisters focuses on prevention. It is the guidance and support of a trusted mentor that makes the difference. Youth we support are resilient and show amazing potential, they simply need a spark to make them shine.
It’s proven that girls who have a positive mentor are less likely to engage in destructive behaviour such as bullying, fighting, binge drinking, drug use, dropping out of school and crime. Mentored youth are more confident, earn higher wages and make better life choice. Mentoring helps create safer schools and communities.
The expert and passionate program staff at Big Sisters work diligently to support volunteers and ensure successful and fulfilling developmental relationships for both Big and Little Sisters.
Big Sisters serves an average of 800 youth each year and many of our mentoring matches become life-long friendships.
However we know the need is so much greater and in some areas kids are on our waitlist for over a year.
Everyday in a child’s life is crucial, they shouldn’t have to wait for the help they need to reach their full potential. Your investment can help change lives today and build stronger communities in the future.
