About Feed the Need in Durham
Feed the Need in Durham (FTND) is the regional distribution hub for emergency food providers across Durham Region. FTND believes that food insecurity should not prevent anyone from fulfilling their potential or participating fully in the life of their community. FTND’s mandate is to alleviate food insecurity by providing fresh, frozen, and non-perishable items to our network of 65 member agencies (food banks, emergency meal programs, shelters, in-school nutritional programs, social service agencies) and other community partners, to support those in our community facing hunger.
FTND’s primary mission is to collect/rescue, process, store (if necessary) and share as much food as possible to those who need it most in Durham Region.
Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, FTND has been at the forefront of Durham’s emergency response to food insecurity in the Region. FTND has shared over 2.5 MILLION pounds with those who need it most since April, 2020. Our community has stepped up to help us by providing generous financial support that has allowed us to expand our walk-in fridge and freezer, add two new refrigerated vehicles, purchase COVID related PPE, and secure additional temporary warehouse space to allow for socially distanced processing & sorting. The additional space has also allowed FTND to accept larger donations that may require storage. The above has all been instrumental in enabling us to increase our distribution to meet the increased need in our community. Through our network, FTND supports over 37,000 visits to food banks each month.
FTND foresees many months of recovery ahead as people recoup their losses and get back on track. In the past 18 months, FTND has seen a 30% percent increase in food bank visits and a 20% increase in emergency meal program access across our network, which we do not anticipate subsiding in the near future.
How your gift will be used
Feed the Need in Durham relies heavily on our community to help us collect, rescue and distribute as much food as possible to support those facing food insecurity in Durham Region. Your generousdonation will be used to support our distribution infrastructure and allocated to the area of need at the time of receipt. For example, to our transportation program to keep our 3 refrigerated vehicles operating and on the road delivery food to those who need it most, or towards our bulk food purchasing program to purchase essential items to be sure our shelves are always stocked and ready to share with our front line emergency food providers or towards keeping our huge walk in fridge and freezer running smoothly which are both instrumental to our food rescue program and to ensuring that we are always able to offer healthy alternatives to those facing food insecurity. Your donation will not be limited to these programs, it will utilized where needed most at the time of your gift.
