About
Habitat for Humanity Edmonton brings communities together to empower families and individuals to build strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable homeownership. We work toward creating generational change for homeowners, and operate a sustainable organization by raising funds, delivering programs, and operating a social enterprise to amplify our impact in the community. Habitat Edmonton has been serving Edmonton and area and communities across Northern Alberta since 1991.
How Our Affordable Homeownership Program Works
We acquire land through donors or partnerships with municipalities. We then work with developers and homebuilders to construct homes using donated funds and funding through grants. Interested homeowners work with our staff to determine their eligibility for our program. Habitat homeowners do not need save for down payment and their mortgage payments are based on 50% of the appraised value of the home. After moving into their new home, Habitat homeowners volunteer 500 hours with Habitat Edmonton or other groups that serve their communities.
When a Habitat homeowner is ready to move on to the open market, we buy back their home. The homeowner receives the equity they have accrued, we renovate or repair the home, and move another Habitat family into the home. This process ensures Habitat homes continue to empower families and strengthen communities.
Our Social Enterprise
Habitat’s social enterprise, ReStore, accepts donations of new and gently-used building supplies, furniture, appliances, housewares and more. Our ReStores contribute to the sustainability of our organization, as the proceeds from our four ReStore locations support our affordable homeownership program. Our ReStores also empower members of our community to participate in a circular economy, decreasing our collective carbon footprint.
Our Impact
In the face of rising housing costs and economic uncertainty, meeting the challenge of ensuring affordable housing for all Canadians has never been more critical. Our affordable homeownership program bridges the widening gap between market rental and market homeownership through access to a life-changing mortgage. Families, couples, and individuals are able to leave behind renting and start building equity and financial stability.
Through the support of our donors, community partners, and volunteers, Habitat Edmonton has helped 883 families (and counting!) to date in Edmonton and communities across Northern Alberta become homeowners. That’s 1340 adults and 2,049 children that now have a safe and stable home. Each of these Habitat families has increased financial security and is empowered to thrive, which creates generational change and stronger communities.
