About Hospice Halifax

Hospice Halifax is a compassionate and supportive community of staff, volunteers, and donors dedicated to making dying and living as comfortable and as meaningful as possible at the end of life.

Hospice palliative care means providing opportunities for patients and families to uniquely address practical, physical, emotional, and spiritual needs while preparing for the patient’s death. Every year, Hospice Halifax welcomes 125-150 terminally ill patients facing the end of life, including vulnerable seniors, people living with physical disabilities, and people who are precariously housed.

WHAT IS HOSPICE CARE?
“Thank you to everyone at Hospice Halifax, especially the nurses who took such special care of our mom…You all went above and beyond what we could have ever imagined. The Hospice truly became our second home and we are so grateful for the time we spent there.”
This is Hospice care.

“There are no words to express our gratitude. Thank you for transforming the worst time in our lives into something positive. Every single one of you went above and beyond.”
This is Hospice care.

Our Impact

End of life impacts everyone. And at Hospice Halifax, our mission is to provide the best end-of-life care to patients and their families. Hospice Halifax is an option for people with end-of-life care needs that can’t be met at home and who don’t need to be in the hospital.  We care for the whole person and their family, focusing on symptom management, comfort care, planning for end of life, helping people achieve the best quality of life possible, and support for families and friends impacted by a loved one’s death.

Each year we provide services for 125 – 150 patients and their families. And we don’t stop there.  We support others in our community facing end of life through our outreach programs including free one-on-one grief counselling, and several bereavement programs. Our survey results show our patients and their families are 100% satisfied with their hospice experience.

The impact we’ve had on the community has grown in our 2 years of operation but we can do much more. Click here for details on our impact. We had many referrals for hospice beds that we couldn’t accommodate because of our limited capacity. With your help, we can expand our services.

How your gift will be used

When you make a gift to Hospice Halifax, you provide someone in your community, and their loved ones, with the very best end-of-life care.  It doesn’t end there. Your gift will continue to support family and friends through compassionate grief counselling and bereavement support programs. Because that is Hospice Care.

With the support of community members like you, any Nova Scotian can access our services for free. However, the community’s needs are far greater than our current capacity and we plan to expand our services and programs in the future to include:

  • Respite beds allowing family caregivers to rest and recharge while their loved ones receive high-quality care
  • More hospice beds – our community requires 30 hospice beds and we currently have 10
  • Expansion of our grief counselling and bereavement support programs
  • Day hospice programs allowing us to provide quality care, symptom assessment and treatment for those facing end of life at home, and not yet ready for admission to our hospice
  • Supports and education for primary caregivers providing end-of-life care to their loved ones

Exploring a gift in your Will, to Hospice Halifax, will ensure that patients, families, and their loved ones can find the compassionate end-of-life care they need.
