About Northern Lights Health Foundation
Everyone wants the best health care for themselves and their loved ones. The Northern Lights Health Foundation helps make that a reality by working with donors to fund health care priorities in the Wood Buffalo region.
Your gift is valued and vital to achieve our mission to support healthcare innovation in the following areas – Emerging Needs, Sustaining Excellence, and Transformational Projects. Established in 1985, the Northern Lights Health Foundation attracts donors to projects and services that provide the best possible care, as close to home as possible.
We fundraise exclusively for Alberta Health Services North Zone Area 10 – a region that spans some 400 kilometres and encompasses rural hamlets, First Nations and Treaty lands, the urban area of Fort McMurray, and the northern community of Fort Chipewyan. The healthcare needs are complex, ranging from emergency life-saving and acute care to maternal and palliative care. The projects we fund are driven by medical staff and health care administrators, who are always striving to elevate the patient experience, increase access to services, and reduce the impact of treatment.
Community members and stakeholders serve as the governing Board of Directors.
For over 35 years the Health Foundation has launched campaigns, hosted major events, applied for grants, held major and minor lotteries, and solicited the community for donations. All with one purpose in mind – to fund the projects presented to us by AHS North Zone. The impact is huge – over $85 million in programs, technology, capital renovations, and services have been funded by donors. Together we have advanced healthcare services to add additional beds to the hospital, expanded community and public health services, added capacity for rural health services, funded systemic changes to improve hospital services, created special needs capacity for maternal care and newborns, added a spinal surgery program, added a palliative care wing, and prepared for emergent issues including a wildfire, a flood, and a pandemic. And so much more.
The Northern Lights Health Foundation has consistently attended to our donor rights and responsibilities and honours gifts as the donors intended.
How your gift will be used
Your gift is greatly appreciated and will inspire and impact patients for generations. You may direct your gift to a healthcare program of your choice or to our Greatest Needs Fund. The Greatest Needs Fund is allocated by the Health Foundation Board of Directors directly towards:
- Preparing for emergent needs such as the COVID-19 pandemic;
- Purchasing medical equipment and cutting-edge technology;
- Funding capital development projects, including the construction of new healthcare spaces and upgrading facilities;
- Supporting special patient care programs and healthcare programs and services;
- Funding the operations of the Foundation.
