Founded in 1991, the Saskatoon Council on Aging [SCOA] is a community based nonprofit  and resource hub for older adults 55 plus.

SCOA promotes positive aging for all in an age-friendly community . . . 

  • A positive aging approach fosters a positive attitude about growing older.
  • Age-friendly communities support older adults maintain health and independence, provide access to services and ensure older adults are valued and included in the community.

We build a better future with older adults . . . 

  • A challenge to ageism and ageist stereotypes
  • Promote human rights for older adults
  • Work to prevent elder abuse
  • Promote an age-friendly community where seniors’ voices are heard
  • Provide programs and services that promote dignity, health and independence of older adults

We serve over 4000 members and the Saskatoon area community (about 80,000) older adults. SCOA operates a Resource Centre and a Caregiver Information Centre as well as a full range of age-friendly programs and services. Our Resource Centre is an information hub for older adults 55 plus with resources on housing, health products, finance and community services.


Our Impact

Age-friendly Community Development

  • 409 older adults aged 55+ from Saskatoon and area responded to a research survey and 49 older adults participated in the focus groups to better understand the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the lives of older adults.

Technology and Learning

  • 44 older adults learned how to use a mobile device
  • 62 students and 35 older adults became acquainted through Zoom; older adults learned how to use their technology devices with great tips from the students.
  • Life Long Learning Presentations: 847 attended 26 presentations.

Social Connection

  • Seniors Neighbourhood Hub Club: 840 older adults participated in monthly virtual social events.
  • Telephone Buddy: 220 older adults received a friendly call from volunteers.
  • Century Club Program: 200 members enjoyed virtual presentations and received a monthly newsletter and postcard. Each member received personal phone calls to keep them connected.
  • Pen Pal Program: 12 schools participated with 220 older adults in a letter-writing program.

Fitness and Health

  • SCOA Globe Walk: 43 teams with 687 individuals spent 49,968.3 hours staying physically active between January and April.

Information Services

  • Resource Centre: 2,577 individuals contacted the office for information or to register for a program. 433 Individuals visited the Resource Centre in person.
