Shelters support women and children fleeing violence. We support shelters.
We provide a strong, unified, pan-Canadian voice on the issue of violence against women. With our voice, we help increase awareness to ensure that policies, legislation and regulations are informed by the experiences and insights of our members, the provincial and territorial shelter networks.
We create opportunities to exchange ideas, learn from one another and share resources. We connect knowledgeable and dedicated individuals from coast to coast to coast, so that new ideas are born, best practices are promoted and transferred and those who work in our challenging field feel more connected and more supported. All of this helps to ensure the women and children who turn to shelters and transition houses receive the most effective and compassionate support possible.
*Please note that Women’s Shelters Canada does not run any individual shelters and funds cannot be forwarded to individual shelters. If you’d rather donate to a local shelter, we suggest you do so directly. You can find a shelter near you using our website www.sheltersafe.ca.
What we’re working to address:
Women’s Shelters Canada works to end violence against women by connecting policy and practice and by giving voice to women’s shelters who every day help women fleeing violence rebuild their lives and sense of security for themselves and their children.
In Canada, on average, a woman is killed every six days by a current or former intimate partner.
On a single day in 2014, there were 6,216 women and children staying in shelters across the country primarily because of abuse. On that same day, over 300 women and children were turned away from shelters because they were already operating at maximum capacity. These numbers tell us that too many women and children in Canada continue to experience alarming rates of violence and that current demands exceed existing resources.
How your gift will be used
Donations go towards our work in addressing violence against women at a systemic and national level. As a national organization, we advocate for every woman in Canada to have access to comparable levels of services and protection no matter where she lives. We highlight the valuable work of women’s shelters and transition houses in responding to women and children 24/7. And we also engage in raising public awareness and creating opportunities for shelters to share best practices, which ultimately improves the experiences and lives of the women and children they serve. Check out the work we do here.
In order to reduce and eventually end violence against women, we need to address immediate needs while also working on long-term change. This is why it is important to also donate to your local women’s shelter offering on the ground service to women and their children fleeing violence. We encourage you to consult our sheltersafe.ca website to find the shelter nearest you
