A heritage of support and formation for over 80 years!

Founded February 2, 1943 by Msgr Joseph Charbonneau, the OVDM has as its goal to support seminarians of the Catholic Diocese of Montreal who have responded to the call from God in order to bring the light and joy of Christ to the world.

The OVDM has as its concern to accompany those who are discerning and the candidates in the year of spiritual foundation before their entry into the Seminary; as well as to support the seminarians during their transition into the Grand Séminaire de l’Archidiocèse de Montréal. (The process consists of comprehensive formation over five years in seminary, a pastoral year in parish, and two years of internship in parish.) As well, the OVDM does on occasion underwrite certain activities of priests in our diocese after their priestly ordination.

In this context, our role is crucial; for it enables the candidates to the priesthood to be accompanied and supported throughout their journey to their ordination to the priesthood.

There are very good reasons for supporting future priests, for hoping, and for assuring the Catholic faith for generations to come!

Supporting seminarians will enable us to assure the presence of Christ even now and for generations to come.

Catholic priests are necessary for administering the sacraments, which are a sign of the presence of God among us, for teaching the faith, and for guiding the community in its relationship with God; particularly through the celebration of the Eucharist and Confession / Reconciliation. They are mediators between God and the faithful, making the presence of Christ visible and offering an indispensable spiritual support.

The 7 sacraments: Baptism, the Holy Eucharist, Confirmation, Marriage, Holy Orders, Confession and the Anointing of the Sick are essential to our life in view of our true homeland: Heaven! Above all, they give meaning to our life in a world troubled by division, by the lack of love, and by misunderstanding.

What ends will your donations serve?

Financial support for the formation of future priests of the Catholic Archdiocese of Montreal covers the costs of meals, lodging, and formation for all the seminarians. This is a luminous sharing: your contributions serve to support and accompany future priests in order that they in turn may support us throughout our life-long journey. This also includes donations to the parishes welcoming seminarians as interns.
