SUCO

About

Founded in 1961, SUCO is an international cooperation organization currently working in 11 countries: Canada, Benin, Burkina Faso, Togo, Côte d’Ivoire, Haiti, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Peru, and Senegal. In Canada, particularly in Quebec, we carry out awareness-raising activities and equip young people with tools to better understand issues related to sustainable development, social justice, and the environment.

Guided by values of social justice, equality, and respect for diversity, we support vulnerable communities around the world in order to improve their socio-economic and environmental living conditions in a concrete and sustainable way.

That said, we support large-scale change that cannot be achieved alone. This is why we work in partnership with more than 50 local organizations that are deeply rooted in their communities and possess the expertise and capacity needed to support them effectively.

Our three main areas of action:

To fulfill our mission, our projects focus on three key areas of intervention:

  • Agroecology and the development of sustainable food systems
  • Environmental protection and resilience to climate change
  • The protection of women’s rights and the promotion of their participation

Our Impact

For 65 years, SUCO’s projects have contributed to systemic transformation, creating conditions that enable communities to achieve sustainable development and thrive socially, economically, politically, and environmentally.

In concrete terms, each year, more than 100,000 vulnerable people are supported internationally and over 1,000 young people are engaged and raised in awareness in Canada.

These numbers reflect many inspiring stories:

Like Suzanne, a participant in our ACF-AO project in Senegal. For years, climate change has weakened her food security and threatened her main source of income: oyster harvesting. Through the project’s activities, Suzanne was able to set up new and more sustainable facilities. As a result, she tripled her harvests, fed her entire family, and sold her surplus to generate income. Thanks to the project and the adoption of sustainable practices, she was able to lift herself out of poverty while preserving coastal forests.

How your gift will be used

Every donation you make, big or small, contributes to SUCO’s work on issues that are crucial for the present and future of humanity and the planet.

Your gift supports the collective responses we provide in relation to:

Climate change resilience: we strengthen the ability of communities exposed to climate change to withstand its impacts and recover quickly and effectively, notably by improving infrastructure, offering awareness workshops, creating guides, and more.

Agroecology: we help farmers produce better and more of the food they need to feed themselves, earn a living, and support their families, all while respecting the environment.

Respect for women’s rights: we work alongside women to develop tailored solutions that ensure the protection of their rights, the strengthening of their skills, and their full participation. Our actions range from awareness campaigns and skills-building to support for entrepreneurship.
