About
The Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation’s (DGH Foundation) sole mission is to support innovation and exceptional care at the Dartmouth General by connecting with those who believe in the Dartmouth General and the communities it serves.
Currently, the Foundation is undertaking its newest campaign – Lead On, driving patient-centred innovation. This campaign is focused on providing amazing innovations in healthcare equipment such as Mako Smart Robotics Orthopedic Robot, the latest technology for DGH staff and patients, introducing new and expanded bursaries for African Nova Scotian and Indigenous learners, adding an increased focus on geriatric and palliative care, creating a new Pelvic Health Suite for urology and gynecology, and more.
Since its inception in 1975, the DGH Foundation has invested over $50 million in new equipment, facilities, and programs at Dartmouth General. Generous donors to the recent Above and Beyond campaign supported Dartmouth General’s recent expansion by helping the DGH Foundation raise more than $13 million, leveraging $137 million provided by the provincial government. Through a generous donation from Fred Smithers, O.C., M.B.E, DGH is now home to the Fred Smithers Centre for Orthopedic Centre, a world-class centre for Orthopedic Care and new home to Mako Smart Robotics Technology that is helping to reduce wait times for hip and knee replacements, increase surgical capacity at Dartmouth General Hospital, and change the future of orthopedic care in Nova Scotia.
In 2019, the Neville J. Gilfoy Wing was added to the Dartmouth General, including eight new operating rooms, new clinical space with more exam and procedure rooms, larger waiting and reception spaces, and new state-of-the-art equipment for cleaning and sterilizing medical instruments.
Our Impact
We invest in new equipment, technology, programs, and professional development for the sole benefit of helping you – our friends, our family, and our neighbours. Here are a few things our donors helped make possible:
- Orthopedic Innovation – The first total hip replacement surgery in Canada using the Mako SmartRobotics™ System has been completed by Dr. Jennifer Leighton at the Fred Smithers Centre for Orthopedic Care at the Dartmouth General Hospital.
- Dartmouth General’s first MRI – The Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation and our community have come together to bring an MRI to DGH, increasing HRM’s imaging capacity by 5,000 scans per year.
- Deanne Reeve Pelvic Health Suite – located within DGH’s Outpatient Centre, focuses on urology and gynecology services. The Pelvic Health Suite will be home to cystoscopy and hysteroscopy procedures and will support increased patient comfort, reduce wait times, and promote efficiencies within the departments of urology and gynecology.
- Community Programs & African Nova Scotian Healthcare Bursaries – DGH is a collection of ethnicities and cultures, both in the people who work here and in the communities we serve. Our diversity leaves us well-positioned to address disparities and to be a leader in developing healthcare equity initiatives for our communities.
and much more!
