About

We are the only organization dedicated to funding world-class research, creating and sharing trusted resources, and advocating for better vision health policies for the nearly eight million people in Canada living with an eye disease that puts them at risk for severe vision loss or blindness.

We believe when science and understanding come together, lives change. This is why we create a bridge between knowledge and hope for people affected by blinding eye disease with programs such as:

  • Research Competitions: top scientists compete for funding for their high-potential research projects, and only the best projects are chosen by the top scientists in the field.
  • Health Information Line: connects individuals with an empathetic person who can listen to their concerns, help answer eye health-related questions, and assist them in finding relevant resources.
  • View Point Education Series: brings the latest information about vision health and research, community resources, and living well with an eye disease through in-person events and online webinars.
  • Young Leaders Program: provides young people with access to resources, guidance, and support on the path to pursuing rewarding careers and finding fulfilling employment.
  • Inherited Retinal Disease (IRD) Patient Registry: helps advance the development of new treatments and cures for IRDs by connecting patients to relevant clinical trials.

Our Impact

“When I was told I had a bad case of wet AMD and needed to start injections immediately, I was scared with a whole lot of thoughts floating around in my head. It was life changing when I found FBC’s View Point education series. For the first time, I was in a room of other people with the same eye disease as me. Now I’m feeling positive about the future.”
— Mary, program participant

Because of donor support, we’ve been fueling sight-saving progress for over 50 years — from research to education to data mobilization. So far, together we have:

  • Invested more than $42 million in research, leading to over 850 discoveries
  • Invested more than $5 million in education, advocacy and community connection programs
  • Funded more than 230 research grants

In 2024 alone, our donors made it possible to:

  • Invest over $2 million in vision research
  • Support 30 new academic discoveries
  • Invest over $1 million in education, support, and community programs
  • Reach 1,560 people through national education and support programs

How your gift will be used

You can change the lives of people living with blinding eye disease — and their loved ones — by ensuring promising, world-class research isn’t left unexplored. And by providing knowledge and support that make living with a diagnosis easier for everyone who needs it across Canada.

By including a gift to us in your will, you’ll not only advance our mission but also create lasting impact for generations of people affected by blinding eye disease.

Ending vision loss caused by blinding eye disease. This is our commitment to you.
