Les Amis de la montagne
About
Les Amis de la montagne is the only citizen-led organization exclusively dedicated to the protection and enhancement of Mount Royal, with a focus on:
- community engagement,
- environmental education,
- conservation of natural habitats,
- and the promotion of the mountain’s interests to support its long-term sustainability.
Thanks to its natural, scenic, and cultural richness, Mount Royal is essential to the quality of life of Montrealers. Les Amis de la montagne works on the ground to preserve this exceptional green space for current and future generations.
Our Impact
Last year, generous donations made it possible to:
- CARRY OUT over 3,000 hours of volunteer work, the planting of 22 species, and more than 1,500 native trees and shrubs
- RAISE AWARENESS among over 14,000 people about environmental conservation issues and the mountain’s natural and cultural heritage
- WELCOME more than 8,500 young people to the mountain, over 1,400 volunteers, and more than 300,000 visitors to the free exhibition A Thousand Faces of Mount Royal: Olmsted the Visionary
- HOST over 100 hikes, 12 family activities, and 300 educational and cultural mediation activities
Les Amis de la montagne also plays a crucial role in advocating for the protection of Mount Royal’s cultural and natural heritage.
Founded in 1986 by a group of citizens and organizations concerned about maintaining the natural character of Mount Royal, Les Amis de la montagne opposed the construction of a telecommunications tower for tourism purposes in the park. Since then, we have worked closely with public authorities, institutional landowners, community groups, businesses, and the wider public to preserve the integrity of Mount Royal.
How your gift will be used
Leaving a legacy gift to Les Amis de la montagne means helping to preserve the beauty, accessibility, and safety of the natural spaces at the heart of Montréal for future generations.
Your gift will support the protection and enhancement of Mount Royal through the following areas of action:
- Natural habitat conservation: restoring the mountain’s natural environments with the involvement of the community
- Environmental education: training the next generation of Mount Royal stewards through our day camp, forest school, school programs, and awareness initiatives
- Cultural mediation: inspiring wonder and love for the mountain through guided hikes, shinrin-yoku (forest bathing), concerts, storytelling evenings, art-and-nature workshops, photo contests, exhibitions, and more
- Research and development: improving intervention methods to support the resilience of the mountain’s natural ecosystems
- Advocacy for Mount Royal’s interests: advising public bodies and engaging the community to ensure the protection of this treasured site for all Montrealers
