Canuck Place is where short lives are lived to the fullest.
Children and hospice are two words that shouldn’t go together. But sadly they do, and that’s why Canuck Place Children’s Hospice exists. We care for more than 800 children with life-threatening illnesses and their families, driven by the belief that every life is precious and should be lived to its fullest.
Canuck Place Children’s Hospice is BC and Yukon’s only pediatric palliative care provider, meeting the need for a hospice that is dedicated to caring for children. We have two provincial locations in Vancouver and Abbotsford, which provide medical respite, pain and symptom management, art, music, and recreation therapy, end-of-life care, and grief, loss, and bereavement counselling for families across the two provinces. All at no cost.
At its heart, Canuck Place is a place of comfort and compassion where children with life-threatening illnesses can receive expert clinical care while experiencing the simple joys of being a child.
Recognized internationally as leaders in the field of pediatric palliative care, the need for our services has grown exponentially over the years. But with donor support, our talented team of doctors, nurses, care workers, and volunteers provide expert care for children with short lives and the families who love them.
Care: Our staff provide high-quality care to ensure days are filled with joy, not suffering.
Our medical team cares for children in-hospice throughout multiple days, which allows for comprehensive pain and symptom management. Through our Nancy Chan Enhanced Community Care program, we provide care to children and families in the comfort of their own homes.
Play: We provide a place where kids can still be kids and explore the world with a sense of joy and wonder.
Our goal is to help children celebrate the experience of being a kid by providing them with opportunities for connection, excitement and fun! Through art, education, recreation and music therapy, children are able to express themselves and live their lives to the fullest alongside their family and friends.
Family: We keep families together during uncertain times, so that no moment is missed.
Our clinical team carefully creates unique care plans to address the wishes of each child and family, while our counselling team helps members of the family, including grandparents, process their grief. At the end of life, our team helps families with memory making–taking handprints, moulds, and other mementos that help make the memory of the child a little more tangible.
