About
About Savage Society
Telling our own stories sourcing traditional and contemporary Indigenous perspectives, Savage Society was created in 2004 for members to produce their own stories as practicing Indigenous Theatre and Film Artists. Artistic Director Kevin Loring is a member of the Nlaka’pamux Nation from the Lytton First Nation in British Columbia.
We develop work that reflects our worldview, sourcing traditional stories and cosmologies and our contemporary realities as Indigenous people for both professional and community settings.
Savage Society operates on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh), S’ólh Téméxw (Stó:lō), sq̓əc̓iy̓aɁɬ təməxʷ (Katzie), Qayqayt, kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem ), Kwantlen and sc̓əwaθenaɁɬ təməxʷ (Tsawwassen) Nations.
Our Impact
“Savage Society seeks to attack fiercely the ignorance and preconceived notions directed towards Indigenous people, and to show our history and personal struggles as human struggles, challenging stereotypes by sharing our hearts, minds and spirits through our craft. We are all people in nature. In our natural state, regardless of race, wealth or status, we are all deeply human. We are all a part of the Savage Society.”
– Kevin Loring, Artistic Director
IN COMMUNITY
Since launching in 2013 as part of the Lytton River Festival, Songs of the Land is now a multi-phased community and artist collaboration project sourcing the traditional stories and culture of the Nlaka’pamux people in Lytton, BC.
ON THE LAND
Savage Society embraces every opportunity to take the work onto the land and directly to Indigenous communities. A recent project is You used to call me Marie…written by Métis Cree playwright, actor, director, and producer Tai Amy Grauman that toured communities across Alberta and Saskatchewan in the summer of 2022.
TELLING OUR OWN STORIES
Savage Society is committed to supporting young Indigenous voices. Supporting the work of emerging Indigenous creatives is a central pillar of the company’s activities.
