About
Scarborough Health Network (SHN) is the third-largest health network in Ontario, with three hospitals—Birchmount, Centenary, and General—and eight satellite sites. Our dedicated team of over 950 physicians and 6,300 staff members provide exceptional care to more than 850,000 patients each year.
Our comprehensive services include emergency care, diagnostic imaging, surgery, rehabilitation, and specialized care in pediatrics, mental health, and oncology. We are home to North America’s largest nephrology program and the region’s designated cardiac and spine care centre.
Our hospitals have historically been underfunded and left behind, but our dedicated healthcare teams have never let it stop them from providing exceptional quality care. We do more than anyone thought possible with less than anyone could imagine.
Together, we can imagine what we could do with more.
Our Impact
SHN serves one of Canada’s most diverse communities, where 59% of the population are new Canadians and 74% are visible minorities. This diversity brings unique health challenges such as higher instances of chronic kidney disease and diabetes.
Historically underserved, Scarborough faces significant healthcare challenges that require urgent and comprehensive solutions. We manage 176,000 emergency visits annually in rooms built for half, perform 2,000 cardiac procedures in two labs, treat over 6,000 chronic kidney disease patients yearly, and conduct 61,700 surgeries annually in some of Ontario’s oldest operating rooms.
SHN Foundation’s Love, Scarborough campaign has been pivotal in raising awareness about the health inequities we face, and our community has rallied together to support us, but we still have work to do.
Our community deserves accessible and inclusive healthcare they can depend on. Our staff deserve to work in modern facilities that match their expertise. You can help us close the gap between world-class care and aging hospitals.
