About
A bequest or legacy gift to Sierra Club Canada Foundation is a very personal and profound demonstration of your commitment to making our environment healthier and safer. Your gift is a reflection of your deeply held values and beliefs for making the world a better place. Choosing to leave a bequest can be a special part of the legacy you leave behind.
The Sierra Club Canada Foundation empowers people to be leaders in protecting, restoring and enjoying healthy and safe ecosystems. We have five chapters: Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, Prairie, and a nationwide Youth Chapter. In our work:
- We champion climate solutions and a rapid transition to clean energy.
- We fight for environmental and social justice.
- We work to protect and restore nature and endangered species.
- We believe in getting people outside to explore and enjoy the outdoors.
- We promote the conservation of resources.
At its heart, Sierra Club Canada Foundation is a grassroots organization with a “think globally, act locally” philosophy. Members are encouraged to actively contribute to environmental causes that engage or inspire them, in a capacity that best suits their capabilities. We also help people take action to engage with leaders and other people in their community.
Working with a strong volunteer base and collaboratively with other organizations has allowed Sierra Club Canada Foundation to successfully engage in a range of environmental activities that directly benefit both people and the planet.
Our Impact
In two years on climate action alone we have:
- Halted three huge East Coast LNG projects
- Helped secure an emissions cap framework on oil and gas corporations.
- Helped shelve the massive Bay du Nord offshore oil project for up to three years (working with allies globally to halt the Equinor oil and gas company).
- Prevented new oil exploration near Sable Island, NS.
- Promoted renewable energy democracy.
- Monitored air quality in Ottawa.
There’s much more:
- Wild Child programs in Alberta, NS, and PEI have doubled the amount of time spent outside by children from 30,000 to 60,000 hours.
- We’ve championed the Rights of Nature as a legal concept.
- Our Prairie Chapter planted a 600 square foot garden full of wildflowers and grasses in Manitoba held Indigenous-led walks in Edmonton.
- Our Ontario Chapter is fighting to close the Line 5 oil pipeline, has planted trees and cleaned up beaches.
- Our Quebec Chapter also fights Line 5 and published a guide for municipalities on how to protect birds.
