About

The Contemplative Society (TCS) is an inclusive non-profit society incorporated in the Province of British Columbia in 1997 and then registered as a charitable organisation with the CRA. TCS teaches contemplative prayer as a practice based in the Christian Wisdom tradition, while also welcoming and being supportive of other meditation traditions.

TCs offers a consistent and balanced path for spiritual growth and transformation rooted in prayer, silence, mindful work, and in the 1,500-year-old wisdom of our Benedictine contemplative heritage.

The Contemplative Society actively nurtures local and global teachers of the contemplative way and maintains a consistent staff to communicate with members and to provide a regular and balanced schedule of retreat, teaching, and workshop opportunities, both in-person and online. TCS also supports an online store that makes available books, MP3s, transcripts, and e-courses from our teachers.

Our Impact

The Contemplative Society supported, draws upon, and promotes the Rev. Dr. Cynthia Bourgeault and her works as one of the primary Wisdom teachers for the Society. TCS also promotes Cynthia’s protege, Heather Ruce, and our own Wisdom teachers who follow in Cynthia’s lineage; the Rev. Dr. Therese DesCamp, Rev. Henri Lock, and Rev. Lorie Martin, as leaders and guides in the Christian Wisdom path. TCS does so by sponsoring retreats, Wisdom schools, and workshops led by Cynthia and other distinguished teachers of the Christian contemplative path, and through the sales of instructional and inspiration materials available in text, audio, and e-course format, supportive of the contemplative life.

How your gift will be used

Legacy gifts to The Contemplative Society are primarily used to support ongoing programming, such as in-person and hybrid retreats, online events, and other contemplative teaching and practice opportunities. From these activities, TCS produces text, audio, and e-course teachings to support the global network of contemplatives, Wisdom schools, and their practices. Gifts can also be designated toward scholarship funds for sponsoring young adults and those with minimal financial means to attend TCS activities at no or low cost to them. In this way, TCS strives to make high-quality contemplative learning and practice opportunities accessible to all those who seek it.
