RAVEN (Respecting Aboriginal Values and Environmental Needs)

About

RAVEN raises legal funds to assist Indigenous Peoples who enforce their rights and title to protect their traditional territories.

Our Vision is a future grounded in Indigenous laws and legal orders, where lands and waters thrive and all peoples live in just and reciprocal relationship.

Our Mission is to raise and steward supporter funds to support Indigenous Nations in advancing self-determination through Indigenous-led litigation that protects their lands and waters.

How we work:

  • Indigenous Nations lead their legal strategies; RAVEN mobilizes financial and public support through a nation-centred partnership approach so legal actions proceed on Nations’ terms.
  • We build informed public support through communications and education that deepen understanding of Indigenous laws and legal orders.
  • We focus our resources where we can responsibly and sustainably add value, aligning partnerships and campaigns with our mission, capacity, and commitment to Indigenous leadership.
  • We do not provide legal advice, direct funding to individuals (e.g., bursaries or grants), or lead Nations’ legal strategies, and we are a non-partisan organization.

Our Impact

Indigenous Peoples in Canada have some of the most powerful environmental rights in the world—but only if they can afford to uphold them in court. RAVEN works to support Indigenous Peoples in enforcing their rights and title in court to protect their lands, sovereignty, and ways of being by partnering with First Nations bringing legal actions that seek redress for violations to Indigenous land and rights. Indigenous-led litigation is sparking transformative change across Canada, and every campaign we take on is an opportunity to redefine justice through setting legal precedents that aim to return stewardship and sovereignty to First Peoples.

To date, RAVEN has funded over $25M to support the work of Indigenous access to justice and uplifted over 43 First Nation communities. Through fundraising and public education activities, RAVEN is committed to advancing Indigenous rights and taking action for our shared futures by establishing environmental legacies.

By supporting RAVEN, you are part of a movement that increases access to justice so that  Indigenous Peoples can afford to assert their rights and reclaim environmental stewardship through litigation against colonial governments and extractive corporations. What is at stake for Indigenous Peoples is at stake for everyone: basic rights to clean water and abundant lands that support ecosystems for all life and for all generations.

How your gift will be used

What is Generational Giving?
Generational giving, legacy, or planned giving is a decision rooted in care and forethought to support a future you believe is possible for the next generations. It is an act that shows hope for the future. When you set aside a gift to an organization you believe in, you are ensuring that the movement for justice you believe in will continue to grow and have impact. A generational gift gives you the opportunity to choose how your gift will grow, what it will nourish, and the direction it will take. A generational gift is not simply a donation, but it is a statement of solidarity with a more just future. It is a way to align your personal legacy with the future you want to see take root.

What will your legacy nourish?
RAVEN sits at the intersection of environmental protection and Indigenous justice — two watershed movements. Within these movements lies incredible possibility.

When you include RAVEN in your plans, you invest in legal actions led by Indigenous Nations that are upholding their rights, protecting their lands, and defending the ecosystems that sustain us all. You invest your resources in service of regeneration, helping to restore balance where harm has been done, and strengthen pathways towards accountability for governments and corporations, and thriving for the natural world.

Your legacy could be a part of how we change the future, together.
